I listed the 450 cabrio for sale last night. Within a couple hours I had 112 messages. By the time I went to bed, that number jumped to 150. I was getting so many messages that I couldn’t keep up.
I woke up to a total of 200 messages. I listed the car as running but not driving and that it was a gray market import. I thought people hated smarts and wouldn’t even give mine the time of day. But nope, the messages just kept coming. I thought I had overpriced the car, but I guess I should have charged more!
In the end I got more than I wanted to sell it for. Bye bye little car, hope you enjoy your new home.

I’m glad you sold it easily! That’s always a relief. Selling stuff and dealing with buyers can be a pain.

That sure was a pleasant surprise. Frankly, I'm surprised. Selling a car within a day sure is a relief.

That's awesome!

Always nice when selling a car goes so smoothly.

I’m most surprised at how much interest there was for a smart that couldn’t even move under its own power. You could buy a newer driving one for what I sold this for.
A YouTube friend has been trying to sell his forever, so I thought no way was I going to offload this quickly or for how much I wanted to get for it.

Wow, 200?
If you don’t mind me asking, how much did you get for it? I didn’t know there was a big market for gray market import smarts.

200 replies is just insane. What was the final selling price?

Why is it grey market?

Congrats! I’m sad to see your Smart fleet shrinking, but also love what it is making room for. Good job on a quick and easy sale!

The first generation Smart wasn’t sold here officially. This one was modified and homologated by another company to be sold in the states.

Meanwhile I’m trying to sell a perfectly functioning, but a bit rusty, truck for $2,200 and I haven’t gotten a single hit.

a smart car that can’t move under it’s own power for cheap enough is the perfect excuse for an engine swap, maybe a lot of them has been watching fasterproms and want to copy it

I got $1700 for it. Bought it for $3k a couple years ago and I thought I paid too much for it lol. Back then the roof didn’t work and the headlights weren’t on speaking terms with the taillights.

$1700. It was a car that had a completely shot battery, a seized alternator, and a transmission that should work fine but may also need service. I paid $3k for it a couple years ago. Back then it had electrical gremlins and a roof that didn't work.

That's what happened to my non-running Stella scooter. I was shocked. Market seems to be in a really strange place right now

That's what I expected to happen to me. Maybe smarts have newfound popularity after the fasterproms build. lol

Thanks!
It won’t be shrunken forever. :) I’ll back up to four in the future, but it’ll likely be a diesel or something really special (maybe a roadster???) . But that's likely a far off thing. Right now I'm optimizing the space I have for a dream team of vehicles I've always wanted.

Not bad at all for an inop car. What’s next? Another smart?

I actually sold it to make space for the Audi TT Quattro I picked up a few days ago!
Probably won't be the end of my smart collecting, but the next one will probably be a diesel or something really special like a roadster. But first, I'll want to move out of my apartment into a house or something. I'm maxed out on space.

The first generation smart wasn’t distributed in the U.S. People import them through Canada, where they were sold (only with the diesel engine), or one that has already been imported by a specialty grey-market-conversion company . All the newer-generation smarts are gas-only or electric.

Where are you at and details on said truck?

SE South Dakota, ‘99 F-150 extended cab , 5.4, 4wd, 214,000 miles.
Rockers, bed corners, bottom of the driver door are all a bit rusted which is typical, I’d still say it’s better than the average for this area, and the box side on this side is really the worst of it.
